Rift (oceanic)  Rift océanique
A long and narrow trough within the oceanic lithosphere developped by the stretching and thinning of the lithosphere, and characterized by the downward movement of lithospheric blocks along normal faults. Continental rifts evolve into oceanic rifts upon the beginning of the extrusion of new oceanic lithosphere along the rift axis.
