Bilingual glossary of geology

Cyanobacteria  Cyanobactéries
A group of microorganisms that produce oxygen and carbohydrates by photosynthesis. It is believed that photosynthesis originated in cyanobacteria, and that through this activity, the Earth's primitive oxygen-depleted atmosphere was modified into an oxidizing one. The increase in oxygen content in the atmosphere allowed the development of respirating life forms (adapted from: Grotzinger et al., 2007).
